Before anything is touched

Nothing gets repaired until it is documented. We photograph the forced point exactly as we found it — the jamb, the strike plate, the tool marks, the lock — because once the repair starts none of that can be recovered.

Those images and a written account of the damage go to you. Insurers routinely ask for precisely this and a claim is far smoother with it than without.

Making it secure tonight

Securing comes before repairing. A jamb can be reinforced, a strike plate replaced with a longer one into the stud, a temporary cylinder fitted, a sliding door pinned. In most cases the door is locking properly again before we leave, not boarded over.

Boarding is a last resort here, not a default. It is what you do when a door or frame is genuinely beyond a same-night fix, and it should be the exception rather than the standard answer to every forced entry.

Why the locks change afterwards

We rekey after a break-in regardless of whether keys were reported missing. Spare keys by the door, in a drawer or in a bag are quick to pocket and slow to miss.

Since we already have the cylinders open, it adds very little to the visit and it settles the one question that otherwise keeps people awake: whether somebody out there can still walk in.
